A NOTE FROM SUSIE

"Georgia's story began with someone close to me — someone whose grief became the whole house. I wanted to write about that particular kind of stuck. But more than that, I wanted to write about what comes after. About the moment a woman looks up, looks forward, and decides — bravely — that she is allowed to want something again."

Summer At The Palazzo is a story about what we hold on to, what we owe the people we've lost, and the moment a woman finally decides what comes next.

------   WHERE THE STORY TAKES PLACE

A palazzo in
the Tuscan hills

-------

A nine-bedroom palazzo in the Tuscan hills, restored over a decade by a man who loved beautiful things. Travertine walls. An iron staircase. A south-facing window that throws a bar of light across the entrance hall at a particular hour of the morning.

Georgia knows this light.

She and her husband helped design this room. Coming back to it alone is the hardest thing she has ever done — and the beginning of the bravest.

The palazzo sits in the Tuscan hills above Lago di Fiore — the fictional lake at the heart of the Echoes of the Lake series, drawn from Susie's own years living in Tuscany.

-----   THE CHARACTERS

The people at the heart of it

Georgia

THE WIDOW · THE LOST ONE

At fifty, Georgia has been drifting since she lost her husband — avoiding home, avoiding decisions, avoiding the palazzo most of all. It holds too much of who she was. Facing it means deciding who she is now.

Kate

THE SISTER · THE PRACTICAL ONE

Kate has always been the practical one — the sister who keeps things moving, keeps things together. She needs the palazzo sold, and she needs it quickly. What she hasn't told Georgia is that her own life is quietly falling apart.

Ben

THE BUILDER · THE UNEXPECTED ONE

Ben knew Georgia years before any of this. He comes to Tuscany with a specific job to do — assess the building, report back, leave. He is steady where Georgia is unsettled, practical where she is emotional. He is not supposed to be part of the story.
